Automotive Wiring Harness

Definition of Automotive Wiring Harness

The wiring harness is the main body of the network of automotive circuits, and without the harness, there would be no automotive circuits. At present, whether it is a senior luxury car or an economical ordinary car, the form of the automotive wiring harness is basically the same, which is composed of wires, connectors, and wrapping tape.

Specifications of the car wire

Automotive wire, also known as low-voltage wire, wire are copper multi-core flexible wire common specifications are 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 4.0, 6.0 square millimeters, each with the allowable load current value.

Take the whole vehicle wiring harness as an example:

0.5 gauge wire for instrument lights, indicators, door lights, dome lights, etc.; 0.75 gauge wire for license plate lights, front and rear lights, brake lights, etc.; 1.0 gauge wire for turn signals, fog lights, etc;

1.5 gauge wire is suitable for headlights, horns, etc;

The main power cord requires 2.5 to 4 square millimeter wire. The key is to look at the maximum current value of the load, such as the battery override cable, positive power line is a special car wire used separately, their wire diameter of more than ten square millimeters.

Classification of automotive wiring harness

The main wiring harness is generally divided into the engine (ignition, EFI, power generation, starter), instrumentation, lighting, air conditioning, auxiliary appliances, and other parts, with the main wiring harness and branch wiring harness.

The main wiring harness of the whole car often takes the instrument panel as the core part and extends before and after. It is divided into front wiring harness (including instrumentation, engine, front light assembly, air conditioning, battery), rear wiring harness (tail light assembly, license plate light, luggage compartment light), roof wiring harness (door, roof light, audio speaker), etc.

Standard Automotive Wiring Harness Circuits

The most basic automotive wiring harness will typically contain 12 "circuits", or lengths of wire for a specific purpose, with a designated fuse holder in the fuse block for each circuit:

  1. Radio

  2. Wipers

  3. Turn Signals

  4. Gauges

  5. Stop Lights

  6. Horn

  7. Hazard Flasher

  8. Taillights

  9. Parking Lights

  10. Dash Lights

  11. Distributor

  12. Heat & A/C

Each of the circuits listed serves a vital or extremely common electrical accessory, which is why most wiring harnesses come with at least 12 circuits. However, many vehicles have additional electrical accessories beyond those listed. An 18 circuit harness may add six circuits for power accessories, such as:

  1. Power Windows

  2. Power Locks

  3. Electric Fan

  4. Electric Fuel Pump

  5. High Level Stop Light

  6. Radio B+ Memory

And a 24 circuit harness will add wiring to support additional accessories:

  1. Under Hood Light

  2. Clock

  3. Lighter

  4. Dome Light

  5. Trunk Light

  6. Glove Box Light

As you can see, the number of circuits you need for your wiring harness will depend on the electrical accessories you have (or want to have) in your vehicle

Marking

Wire harnesses on the ends of the symbols on the numbers and letters to mark the connection of the wire object, the operator can see the symbols correctly connected to the corresponding wires and electrical devices, to facilitate the repair or replacement of the harness; or the same circuit with a wire color to distinguish

The color of the wire is divided into single-color wire and two-color wire, the use of color is generally the standard set by the car factory.

Wrapping method of automotive wiring harness

The surface of the wire harness is wrapped in different ways according to the different parts of its use:

  • Engine harnesses work in a harsh environment, so they are all wrapped with high flame retardant, waterproof, and high mechanical strength threaded pipe.

  • The working environment of the front cabin wire is also relatively poor, most of the branches are also wrapped with threaded pipe with good flame retardancy, and some branches are wrapped with PVC pipe.

  • Instrument line working space is small, the environment is relatively good, available tape full wrap or flower wrap.

  • The door line and headliner line workspace is small, available tape full wrap, part of the branches available industrial plastic wrap; finer headliner line can be directly glued to the body with sponge tape.

  • Chassis line because of more contact parts with the car body, so the bellows wrap to prevent the harness wear damage.
